How to Determine the Right Violin Size
Violins are made in eight different sizes with 4/4 (or full size) being the largest and 1/16 the smallest. All adults play 4/4 violins with the exception of very petite adults, who will sometimes play the 7/8 size (not shown on the chart).
Please note that this information is provided as a free service and without warranty or liability. There are different methods of sizing a violin, so if your teacher has a recommendation, you should follow your teacher's advice.
Stand with your left arm fully extended, perpendicular to your body. Measure from the neck to the middle of your palm.
The chart below shows the comfortable ranges for each violin size. For example, if your arm measurement (see above) is 18", the 1/8 size violin will be most comfortable.
If measurements are not available, you can approximate the violin size by using a child's age. This is not the most accurate system, as some children will be large or small for their age.
