Mario Almonte

Specialization: Voice and Piano

About Mario

Hispanic American tenor Mario Almonte III is an emerging artist in todays opera world. He possesses a “bright tenor voice” and a natural high register which make him ideal for the Bel Canto repertoire. Thus, composers like Rossini, Donizetti, and Mozart are amongst his core repertoire. Recently he won 1st place, in the emerging artist category, of the Classical Singer Online Vocal competition, Covered Count Almaviva in Opera Tampa’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and was in the premier of Maestro Anton Coppola’s opera Lady Swanwhite.

This however was not always the plan for Mario’s future. Mario grew up in a Christian Hispanic American home where school, church, and merengue parties were the largest priorities of his young life. It was not until college that he even started to realize his love for classical music, and his talent for singing. In actuality, his interest in joining the Fine Arts Club on the Pasco Hernando Community College (PHCC) campus lead him to discover his musical abilities. It was during an inquiry about club participation that he was asked if he had any singing ability by the club president, who informed him that all members of the club were members of the PHCC Chamber Singers. Mario was then lead to an audition space and was asked to sing “My country tis of thee” from a hymnal, on the spot. He was surprisingly successful and was offered a full tuition waiver to join the Club and sing tenor as a member of the PHCC Chamber Singers.

After PHCC, Mario attended the University of North Florida where he graduated with his Bachelors Degree in Vocal Performance in 2014 and later received his Masters Degree from the University of Miami in 2016. He has a growing resume with consistent performances since the start of his journey in 2010, and is currently auditioning for young artist programs, and performing, while teaching private voice and piano lessons in Lakeland, Florida. Mario has sung leading operatic roles in La Cenerentola (Prince Ramiro), Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Count Almaviva, Cover) On the Wings of Poesy (John Keats), Mavra(The Hussar), Cosi Fan Tutte (Ferando), two separate renditions of Gianni Schicchi (Rinuccio), and The Mikado (Nanki-poo). He has sung supporting roles for Ainadamar (Torero), The Death of Webern audio recording (Jenkins), The Consul (The Magician), and The Marriage of Figaro (Don Curzio). Among other musical endeavors, Mario has sung in leading roles in scenes from Elisir d’amore as Nemorino and L’amico Fritz as Fritz. In addition to solo operatic roles, Mario maintains an interest in choral music and has performed as a tenor soloist in Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s St. John Passion, and, on a number of occasions, Handel’s Messiah.

Mario’s love for music and the classical art form has grown immensely during the course of his study and so has his passion to share it with others. He believes the beauty and tradition of this art form is timeless and is an enriching form of artistic development in education. Mario is an avid learner and continues to better his musicianship and artistry through daily practice and consistent immersion. This summer, Mario will be traveling to Germany to attend the Berlin Opera Academy and Lyric Opera Studio Weimar, where he will be developing his craft singing Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and Judge Danforth in The Crucible.
